This Sunday Havi and I took a trip to the teeny Chinatown in Austin for the Chinese New Year Celebrations. We had so much fun and wished Peter could have come with us.
We arrived a little early to watch the dragon dance, which Havi had been really excited to see, and got a spot on the 'front row'. This was about 10 feet from a 20 foot long string of firecrackers that were set off before the dancing began.
Here's a picture before the firecrackers were set off... that red line down the middle of the path is the string of firecrackers!
And one after. We sat with our hands over our ears and our heads down as we got showered with bits of the firecrackers.
The actual dance was so much fun to watch. The tradition is to 'feed' the dragon's dollar bills. At first Havi was reluctant to do so, but once she saw the other kids doing it my purse was suddenly a little bit lighter!
She really loved this little orange dragon :-)
After the dance we went to queue up to have her face painted. Havi chose yellow flowers and the result was beautiful. She was quite upset after it smudged at nap time and she wasn't able to show it to Rebecca when she came over for dinner.
All in all it was a fun day doing something different. We'll have to make a point to go next year.
